Ruthie, for some reason I missed the notification of your comment. You are right, a single person IS often an object of envy. They can do as they please, go where they want, when they want (as long as they are not also single parents), they can stay up late, sleep on the couch, enjoy bad habits, eat what and where and when they want -- there is no "other person" to accommodate. Yes, that is true. But trust me -- the person who is married, and envies the single, and then, becomes suddenly single him/herself -- well, reality hits hard, real fast! And NO ONE REALLY prefers singlehood, at least no one who enjoys couplehood! The loneliness can be staggering.
u may not always be an object pity...in fact, i know from personal experience, that a single person is often an object of envy...
